You can be a part of the fun and effective youth-led program, “Students Leading Students (SLS)”. “Why?” you ask? You will receive tons of free stuff, assemblies, seminars, conferences, SLS training and personal support. SLS comes to your school. Students Leading Students Chapters are proficient in health and safety activities that encourage life changing behaviors. SLS is YOU…reaching out to others.
The SLS SAMHSA Chapter Study surveyed 425 high school students from 21 high schools in 2013...increasing in 2014. If your school does not have a health and safety chapter, or an inactive chapter, SLS will help you. SLS will give you the resources, support and training needed to truly save lives.
Student Leadership Services, Inc. (SLS) will help Michigan public, private and parochial high schools develop a Students Leading Students chapter at your school. SLS is a comprehensive program including alcohol prevention, drug prevention, bullying, safe driving awareness, suicide awareness, school climate and more. The expected outcomes are to reduce unhealthy and risk taking behaviors among youth ages 14-18 and increase health and safety youth-led programming, Remember, SLS is a proven effective, validated program!
SLS is happy to announce that Ford Driving Skills for Life will be sponsoring thirty free high school assemblies for you! We would like to thank Ford Driving Skills for Life for providing opportunities to further our mission of helping SLS students help youth remain safe, healthy, and alcohol and drug free. We would also like to thank Ford Driving Skills for Life for partnering with us to ensure that students have the knowledge and tools to make good decisions especially while driving. The SLS assemblies will feature the founder of SLS, Larry Rotta, or other SLS speakers, and will include leadership training for the SLS chapters.
Due to the amount of snow days this year we will be continuing to offer these assemblies in spring 2014 and fall 2014.
Thank you to Ford Driving Skills for Life for sponsoring the assemblies.

Pam Voss-Page, Executive Director and Doug Piper, SLS Student of the Year 2013
“You are Enough. You are SO enough.”
Hello. I am Doug Piper (Freeland HS). I never would have guessed that I would be named Student Leadership Services’ Student of the Year. I did not believe that I could compare myself to ambitious students from the entire state of Michigan and be the most deserving of this award. I suppose you can infer my level of self-worth. As a leader it is easy to empower others and tell them that they are enough just the way they are. However, it is more difficult to spend time focusing on how enough I am. With a challenging academic schedule and extracurricular activities, I often feel like the quality of my work with SLS is not enough. This award changed that. When I stay up for an hour past my bedtime (9:30) preparing an agenda on a Wednesday night for the following morning, an agenda that I should have prepared at any other time during that week, I feel like my commitment isn’t enough. Mrs. Klida’s (Advisor at Freeland HS) lessened work load due to my commitment changed that. But, when I look at my attitude toward others and the actions that they are not responsible for, an external force cannot change that. Only I can change that. When I feel like I am not enough to hold a place in the heart of the girl of my dreams, I can change that. When I believe that I am not enough for my own happiness, who can change that? Me. Who will change that? Me. If you feel the way that I have felt, listen to these words from Sierra Boggess: “You are enough. You are SO enough; it is unbelievable how enough you are.” Thank you so much for this opportunity and recognition.
Health Initiatives Led by Youth since 1982!
Students and advisors of health and safety initiatives turn to Student Leadership Services, Inc. (SLS) for support and trainings. SLS is a Michigan non-profit that fosters peer influence. SLS trainings, events and service projects demonstrate student leadership.
SLS and Health Initiative school-based groups believe that:
The use of alcohol and other drugs is self-defeating.
Driving under the influence of alcohol and other drugs endangers lives.
Distracted driving endangers lives.
We endanger our lives when we ride in a vehicle with a reckless or drug affected driver.
Our actions and attitudes have a significant effect on creating positive change. For 32 years, SLS programming/curriculum has been based on Exemplary and Model Programs of the U.S. Department of Education, Center for Substance Abuse Prevention (CSAP), National Institute for Drug Education (NIDA), Michigan Department of Education, Project Alert, Project Northland, Search Institute 40 Developmental Assets, Botvin's Life Skills, High/Scope Youth Development Training, other researchers and youth development experts.
